About Grey
I was born and raised in a small town near Raleigh, North Carolina, where I still reside today with my wife and two sons. I graduated from North Carolina State's School of Design in 1992, where I got the bug to become a cartoonist after doing political cartoons for the school newspaper, The Technician. That led to a full-time gig in newspapers after graduation —first as a Graphic Artist for a small Gannett newspaper in Gainesville, Georgia, and later for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution where I covered, among other things, the 1996 Olympic Games. During that time I also contributed political cartoons to the opinion pages while I created infographics for news sections. In 1997, I returned home to work in the graphics department of The News & Observer, where I was promoted to Graphics Editor in 1999.
I became a member of the National Cartoonist Society in 1997, where I was the proud recipient of the Reuben Award for Newspaper Illustration in 1999. I was nominated again for the award in 2002. Since 1997, I've done caricatures and humorous illustrations on a freelance basis for clients such as MAD Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated for Kids and Cadbury Adams.
Since September of 2005, I've produced a string of sports-related animated shorts for The News & Observer's web site, as well as on a freelance basis for Rivals.com and ESPN.com. In December 2005, I was commissioned to produce an animation for the "Southern Sports Awards," a TV show which aired on Fox Sports Network. In January of this year, I was named multimedia cartoonist for The News & Observer specializing in web animation.
